Every year UNESCO honours those personalities that have contributed to the development of Science, Education, Culture and Communication. It also participates in the days of memory of historical facts and in the anniversaries (of birth or death) of important persons, in order to emphasize their contribution to mankind.
During 2012, the Greek National committee of UNESCO, honoured the 50th anniversary from the death of George N. Papanicolaou, by creating a web page (http://www.unesco-hellas.gr/gr/years_of_pap.html) and organizing several events.
